Silver City, NM to El Paso

Cuba is becoming less and less a mystery and more a beacon of hope. This little island has successfully survived an onslaught from its behemoth neighbor only 90 miles to the North. For 50 years.
There literacy rate is 98% and their infant mortality rate is lower than the United States. Education is universal and free. As is health care. These are all reasons to visit and learn.
Why Cuba? There are so many problems in the world. Why do you pick this cause?
A man from Zimbabwe stood up during one of Lisa's speeches and said that a majority of the doctors in his country are either from Cuba or went to medical school in Cuba. for free. Their only payment comes after they graduate when they are required to go back home and work for their community for two years. Cuba is essential. Without them, we fail. There are people in countries all over the world who will stand up and say the same thing.
This is why Cuba.

The weather has definitely cooled a bit. It is 7:30p and I am sitting in the office at the Unitarian Universalist Community of El Paso. They are playing music from all over Latin America in the sanctuary built by the parishioners. The sky has an intoxicating ominous spirituality. The sky contributes the drums and the pyrotechnics. The loudest thunder just came on cue with the applause. Mother Nature is listening and she approves.

Tonight we stay here and tomorrow we begin our journey to San Antonio. Every day is lived to the fullest. We should all have the opportunity to do this every year. You learn how truly remarkable and hospitable people are.

I think the pan flute was invented during the thunderstorm.
